Introducing Benvolio

[keep_the_peace]

Waking up in a strange bedroom, in a strange house, was bad enough, but then when Benvolio finally made his way to the front door he was greeted by snow outside. Summer might be coming to an end, but it definitely is not snow weather yet, nor is Benvolio dressed for such, in his black silk doublet, black and blue trimmed trunk hose, and black stockings. He does have shoes on, thankfully, though he can't imagine how he would have fallen asleep wearing shoes. It's not like he's had much opportunity to celebrate to the point of blacking out lately, after all.

Regardless, he takes one look at the snow outside and decides to shut the door and instead turn his attention to the table covered in different pamphlets and papers. He has many questions.

"Aye, that would be nice, Lady Tress."

"All right. We'll do that. Do you have any other questions first, though?"

[keep_the_peace]

"None so important they cannot wait," he says. He really has more questions than he can even start to ask, but he figures some time for things to sink in while he focuses on something else entirely will probably do him some good.

"All right. This way, then." She starts in the direction of the game room.

[keep_the_peace]

He follows behind, silently ogling at the weirdness around (lightbulbs mostly) as they walk.

"It's a lot to take in at once, I know."

[keep_the_peace]

"Aye, it is. ...How does that work?" he asks, pointing at a lamp. He can tell that's not a flame but has no clue what else could be happening.

[sporesprouter]

"It's electricity. It's like... harnessed lightning traveling along metal wires."

[keep_the_peace]

"Ah." He will not touch it then!

[sporesprouter]

"It's very useful."

[keep_the_peace]

“How does one… get the lightning in or out?” Since it’s obviously more difficult than lighting a match for a candle.

[sporesprouter]

"I'm a bit less sure about where it comes from because I haven't actually found a source, but it travels through wires in the walls, and if it needs to come out, there are plugs that the machines that use it can attach to to draw from it."

He takes a closer look at the lamp, spots the cord, then follows that down to the plug in the wall. Very tentatively, he touches the wall next to the plug. It just feels like a normal wall. It's not even hot or anything. Next he reaches toward the cord, then stops and looks back at Tress. "'Tis safe?" She did say it was lightning, but then again, the house isn't burned down or anything like that, so who knows.

"Oh, it's fine as long as you treat it respectfully. Don't put things in the sockets that aren't supposed to be there, and whatnot. It's not a lot of lightning."

In that case, he pulls the plug out of the socket, and the lamp turns off. The plug has little pieces of metal on the end, and when he looks at the socket, it seems to just be matching holes in the wall. "Strange," he says, then plugs the lamp back in, at which point it turns back on. "My apologies, Lady Tress," he says as he gets back to his feet. "I did not mean to hold us up."

"There's no rush, I promise. Here, though. Let me show you something." She walks over the lamp to turn it off via switch.

[keep_the_peace]

He laughs. "Thou makest it look so easy!" Benvolio copies what she did, using the switch to turn the lamp on and off a few times. "'Tis much simpler than candles."

[sporesprouter]

"It is! Most things that use electricity have switches or buttons that turn them on and off. In general, if you have to unplug something, make sure it's off first."

[keep_the_peace]

"And not do what I did before," he says, laughing a bit. He didn't get struck by lightning when he unplugged it, so that's good at least. "Hast given me the warning far too late, already I have risked life and limb for knowledge."

She laughs. "Normally nothing bad will happen. But just in case."

"I shall keep it in mind for the future!"
