Introducing Oaklin Nettlewood
Jul. 19th, 2026 03:56 pmOaklin doesn't get much opportunity to head into town now that it's winter, but Ryn had written asking if they had any spare dried herbs, and who is Oaklin to turn down a chance to get some of Ryn's delicious baked goods? They asked if Lior wanted to accompany them on the trip today, but she had opted to stay home where it's nice and warm, and instructed Oaklin to send her love to both Ryn and Jules when they saw them.
Now, several hours later, Oaklin is on their way back home, riding Grumpy Horse, and bundled up under a very warm cloak, their satchel absolutely brimming with muffins and breads and cakes, some enhanced with magical properties, some just delicious in the regular sort of way, and a couple of books Lior had specifically requested they pick up from the library. The sun, as it tends to do during winter, is already starting to set, making the trees and snow glow a golden yellow, when Oaklin notices something... unusual.
Daffodil, Oaklin's absolutely perfect dog, darts into the woods ahead -- a flash of white, black, and brown fur that should absolutely not be this far from the farm. She must have gotten loose somehow, but this isn't like her. She's normally perfect and well-behaved. Oaklin pulls Grumpy Horse's reins to follow the direction Daffodil ran off in.
It doesn't take long for them to catch up to the dog, who greets Oaklin with lots of tail wagging and some extra kisses, but just in that short amount of time the temperature seems to have dropped considerably, and when Oaklin starts to set off for the farm again, they find themselves... lost?
"Well... this isn't good..." they mutter as they finally manage to exit the trees and are met with a sight they were not expecting. Someone's house. A very large house, up ahead. Notably a house that Oaklin has never seen before, despite having lived in Mossley's Rest for almost a year now. Hopefully the house belongs to someone friendly at least, because it's very cold and very dark outside, and Oaklin might need to stay here for the night.
"Let's go see," they say to Grumpy Horse and Daffodil as the three of them start crossing the grounds toward the building.
