Introducing Benvolio

[keep_the_peace]

Waking up in a strange bedroom, in a strange house, was bad enough, but then when Benvolio finally made his way to the front door he was greeted by snow outside. Summer might be coming to an end, but it definitely is not snow weather yet, nor is Benvolio dressed for such, in his black silk doublet, black and blue trimmed trunk hose, and black stockings. He does have shoes on, thankfully, though he can't imagine how he would have fallen asleep wearing shoes. It's not like he's had much opportunity to celebrate to the point of blacking out lately, after all.

Regardless, he takes one look at the snow outside and decides to shut the door and instead turn his attention to the table covered in different pamphlets and papers. He has many questions.

"Well, not true telepathy. I can't read all their thoughts or anything. I can mostly just figure out what they're feeling."

"Have they... many troubles?" He never considered the feelings of fish before.

[summerdude]

"Only if you take away their water," Magnus says. "Or if Dro decides to take a swim, I guess."

[keep_the_peace]

He laughs. "'Tis easy to see why those issues would be troublesome."

[summerdude]

"Yeah. Like, not to quote the Lorax, but it does seem to suck to be a fish out of water on hot dry land."

[keep_the_peace]

"What is the Lorax?"

[summerdude]

"Oh! He's this guy from a book and a cartoon. Kind of a weird orange creature? His whole thing is he speaks for the trees." Magnus is still lowkey annoyed that he can't speak to trees himself.

[keep_the_peace]

Ah, some sort of fae from a story then. "As well as the fish, it seems."

[summerdude]

"Well, in the movie, they can sing." Magnus pauses, something occurring to him. "Wait. Has anyone told you about movies yet?"

[keep_the_peace]

"I am afraid not."

[summerdude]

"Okay, it's short for moving picture," probably. "They're stories that you can watch, kinda like a play, but they're put on a screen and you can watch the exact same thing again and again. It has moving pictures and also sounds."

[keep_the_peace]

He's definitely picturing something a little closer to a puppet show where you've got pictures pasted onto popsicle sticks for the puppets than what a movie actually is. "Ah, perhaps I will see one some time then. Do they happen often?"

[summerdude]

"Um... not here," Magnus says, with real regret. "Or at least, I haven't found any. Or a DVD player or VHS. --Those are the things that play them. We do have a TV -- which is what you play movies on -- but it really only does video games."

[keep_the_peace]

There's not a lot of words in there that Benvolio understood. "...There is much here I need to learn," he says in response.

[summerdude]

Okay, he's definitely losing him. "I only bring it up because sometimes people -- me, mostly, but also Shen Yuan, whenever you meet him -- are gonna mention movies. If I ever find one, you'll be the first one I show it to, okay?"

[keep_the_peace]

Benvolio nods, making an attempt to commit all of this brand new information to memory. "That would be much appreciated, I thank thee. I should like to see one of these pictures that move."

[summerdude]

"We'll do what we can, dude," Magnus says, grinning. "So how are you settling in? Having fun with Mercutio?"

[keep_the_peace]

"'Tis hard not to have fun when Mercutio is near."

[summerdude]

"Yeah, he's a real barrel of monkeys, huh."

[keep_the_peace]

This is not a phrase Benvolio has heard before, but he feels it in his bones that it accurately describes Mercutio. "He is that, ay."

[summerdude]

"Have you guys been-- wait," Magnus says, and slaps himself on the forehead. "Where are my manners? Are you cold? ...Do you want me to show you around out here?"

[keep_the_peace]

"I am warm enough," debatable, but he doesn't realize Magnus has warming up powers right now so he's resigned to it, "I would not mind being shown around though, if thou wouldst like to."

[summerdude]

"Okay. Well, if you get cold, let me know. I have--" Magnus wiggles his fingers. "Alf seidr. Um, elf magic." He shoves his hands into his jeans pockets. "What do you want to see first? We have the stables, the greenhouses, the orchards, the tower, my family's house, me and Alex's camp, the lake, the sea, the caves, the cliffs, the forest, the training grounds... Whatever it is Janet's doing with the backyard... um, a hedge maze?"

[keep_the_peace]

He almost replies about the hedge maze, but then gets a mental image of getting lost inside a maze, in this weather. Sure, this Magnus says he has magic that can warm him or whatever, but Benvolio doesn't want to bank on that. "I did not know there were cliffs here." He didn't know about half of that other stuff either to be fair. But gotta start somewhere, right?

[summerdude]

"Yep. By the ocean. Me and some of the girls go cliff-diving every once in awhile." Magnus tilts his head. "I bet Mercutio is gonna drag you over there when it gets warmer out, Tally keeps talking about how he should join us next time."
